Choosing Chart Types for GRI 305 Emissions Disclosures

When a bar chart obscures what a stacked area reveals — matching visual form to GRI 305 indicator structure and auditor expectations.

GRI 305 emissions indicators seem straightforward until you sit down to visualise them. Indicator 305-1 asks for direct emissions, 305-2 for energy indirect, and 305-3 for other indirect — but the visual form you choose determines whether an auditor, analyst, or board member can actually read the story your data tells.

Start with the comparison you need

Before selecting a chart type, write one sentence: what comparison does this figure need to make? Common answers include year-over-year change for a single scope, composition of total footprint across scopes, or facility-level breakdown within Scope 1. Each answer points to a different visual form.

For year-over-year Scope 1 totals, a simple vertical bar chart with consistent baseline works. Auditors expect to see individual year values, not smoothed trends. Avoid line charts for fewer than five data points — two or three years connected by a line implies continuity that sparse data does not support.

When stacked areas earn their place

Stacked area charts suit Scope 1 sub-source composition over time — for example, separating stationary combustion from mobile combustion from process emissions. The stack shows both individual source contribution and total footprint trajectory. The risk: if one sub-source dominates (often process emissions in manufacturing), smaller categories become visually compressed. Consider a complementary small-multiples panel for sub-sources below 10% of total.

Dual reporting for Scope 2

Market-based and location-based Scope 2 figures require side-by-side presentation, not overlay. We use grouped bar pairs with clear methodology labels beneath each group. Colour-code consistently across the report: one hue family for location-based, another for market-based. Never rely on colour alone — add pattern fills for greyscale print survival.

Even when full Scope 3 appears elsewhere, GRI 305-3 often needs a summary figure in the emissions chapter. A horizontal bar ranked by category weight communicates hierarchy faster than a pie chart. Pie charts remain common in sustainability reports but perform poorly when categories exceed five or when differences are within a few percentage points.

Footnotes auditors actually read

Every emissions figure needs three footnote elements: reporting boundary definition, emission factor source, and any recalculation of prior-year figures. Place footnotes directly beneath the chart, not on a separate page. Auditors reviewing PDF reports search vertically — displaced footnotes slow the review and generate clarification requests.

A practical checklist

  1. Write the comparison sentence before opening charting software
  2. Test greyscale print at 150 DPI before client review
  3. Verify axis labels include units (tCO₂e, not generic "Emissions")
  4. Confirm prior-year restatements are visually flagged, not silently replaced
  5. Run the figure past someone unfamiliar with your data — if they misread it in ten seconds, redesign

These conventions apply whether you produce figures in-house or commission external visual production. The chart type decision belongs upstream of styling — get the form right first, then apply brand palette and annotation layers.
